WILLIAMSON, NY….Merle J. Spencer, the youngest of the Spencer brothers, passed away on March 4, 2010, at the age of 80, following a long illness. Merle, along with older brothers Delbert and Walter founded the flat half mile oval along Lake Ontario back in 1955. For over 50 years the speedway flourished under their control.
The Spencer family remained at the helm of this speedway until 1994, when they apparently sold the speedway. The family abruptly returned as the management of the track when the proposed purchase fell apart. It was not until 2007 when the track was finally sold to the current owner, John White.
“The Spencer Speedway family is deeply saddened by the passing of Merle,” state White. “Merle continued to be an asset to the track even after the family had sold the speedway.”
Merle might well be remembered best for his true love of the outdoors. He was an avid ice fisherman, snowmobiler and hunter. He was a private person, but opened up to all at the races. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Merle is survived by his wife Ella; children, Donna, (Douglas) Danner, Bryan (Julie) Spencer, Colleen (Todd) Brewer; 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, siblings Delbert Spencer, Walter Spencer, Marvel Morrow, and Catherine Zornow.
A Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, March 9, at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, Ontario. Donations may be made to a charity of ones choice in his memory.
