Timmerman Returns To Victory Lane

Timmerman Returns To Victory Lane

WILLIAMSON, NY…With just two weeks remaining in the 2010 NASCAR Oval Track season at Spencer Speedway, point leader Kevin Timmerman dominated the field, winning by nearly 20 car lengths in the 35-lap NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature run.

“The guys ran me clean tonight,” stated an elated Timmerman in victory lane. “They gave me a lane and I took it.” When asked what his key to success has been recently, he stated, “You just need some patience at this place. It pays off in the end.”

The NASCAR Super Six division was highlighted during the evening, even using the infield pit area. As for the racing it was all Skip Powers, as he won his third Super Six feature in a row and his seventh this season. When he was asked about what he thought made the difference, he responded, “It’s all the guys on this team. They work so hard. We had to deal with a 30 pound penalty after winning last week. They figured it out and here we are again.”

The 15-lap NASCAR Auto Value Scorpion feature looked to be all Dale Lazzaro. A late race caution found Lazzaro denied his win after missing a shift on the restart and fall off the pace. The win went to Otis Bradshaw, his second win of the season.

“The car started having the front end wash out. So we had to work getting the back end around to make it steer right,” stated Otis in victory lane.

The 20-lap NASCAR Street Stock main was won by Kris Hillegeer, his fourth win of the season.

Matt Lees, aboard the Mark Cline 81, took the early lead in the 35-lap NASCAR Sunoco Modified feature. Jake Boerman fell in second with Ryan Beeman was being challenged by Chris Finocchario and Kevin Timmerman. On lap nine, Finocchario move high to pass Beeman, however Boerman drifted high allowing Beeman, Finocchario and Timmerman to get by and start to challenge Lees.

Beeman passed Lees for the lead on lap eleven. One lap later Finocchario and Timmerman had both worked by Lees and were on Beeman’s rear bumper when the yellow flew, lap 15, for an off track excursion by Andy Lewis in the third turn.

The restart saw the yellow fly again when Jeff Rudy spun into the infield grass off the backstretch. On the restart Finocchario poked his nose into the lead by inches to get the 5 lap leader points, but faded back to third, behind Timmerman. Beeman took back the lead.

On lap 20 Timmerman made his move and passed Beeman. He then proceeded to pull out a ten car advantage leaving Beeman and Finocchario in a battle of their own with Finocchario in second. By the checkers it was Timmerman by nearly half a straight away in the lead. Finocchario came home a car length ahead of Beeman. A three car battle for the remaining top five positions found Terry Cheetham finishing ahead of Toad Bradshaw and Eddie Hawkins.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature saw the top three cars under a blanket for most of the race. Kris Hillegeer took command of the lead on lap five. Roger Worden tried repeat attempts to take the point, but each time Hillegeer remained in command. Point leader Mitchell Wright finished in third.

The Auto Value Scorpions saw Dale Lazzaro take the lead at the drop of the green over Russell Peets and Bro Bradshaw. Lazzaro was able to pull away and start to build up a lead in search of his first feature win. On lap 12 the yellow flew when Mike Bradshaw spun out in the second turn in the middle of traffic.

The restart saw Lazzaro miss a shift and fall back dramatically. This allowed fifth place runner Otis Bradshaw to pull around the scrambling cars to take the lead. Otis took the checkers followed by Kevin Bertolone, Russell Peets, Lazzaro and Bro Bradshaw.

The final race of the evening was the Super Six 20-lap main event. Brian Hallett jumped out into the lead from the pole. Patti Davenport, looking for her second feature win of the season, took second followed by Chris Andolino. Hallett grew his lead pulling away from the field. Multi-time feature winner Skip Powers started to make his presence known by lap five, taking third from Andolino.

On lap nine Powers was able to grab second and take off after Hallett. Three laps later in a side-by-side battle Powers was able to take the lead. Powers then pulled away taking his seventh feature win of the season. Hallett came home in second followed by Davenport, Van Grant and Ryan Hillegeer.

New Program Teaches Self Respect

New Program Teaches Self RespectFour women from Webster are leaving this week to attend national training in Charlotte, NC. Why? Because  they are getting ready for "Girls On The Run" a new after school program in Webster that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.

Those attending traing are, Paula Burgin who will be the Community Wellness Coordinator and Council Director, Julie Schillaci, Recreation Supervisor from Webster Parks and Recreation, Janine Sanger, School Psychologist and Chemical Abuse Prevention Coordinator. and Sue Pellegrino, Community Member who is a professionally RN.

Being parents of young girls themselves, and most being avid runners with ages ranging from mid 30's to late 40's might give them some advantage when it come to training. "Not sure if that matters, but we do bring with us more than just "training", said Paula Burgin, soon to be Council Director.

Burgin said they will use interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues and that participantslearn how to celebrate being girls. The program starts March 16th and runs for 12 weeks. Participants will meet twice a week for one hour and the 1st session ends June 12th.  Our training will entail 2 full days of curriculum. We will learn the actual activities and research behind the program. As the Council Director Paula will learn the "business and logistical" side of things. "We end the session by having the girls run/walk in a 5K", said Burgin.

Starting a Girls on the run council is an extensive undertaking. It isn't as simple as purchasing a book and teaching a class. "We are a non-profit organization with a vision of creating a culture that emplowers young girls and woman to celebrate themselves for who they are; exactly how they are", said Burgin. "The process actually took me over two years".

Paula first had to get the funding, and the application and training is expensive. After writing to get a grant from the Greater Rochester Health Foundation, she then had to complete a detailed application to Girls on The Run International. They wanted to know information very similar to writing a grant, such as a needs assesment, funding, and other support and resources. "We waited 3 weeks before we found out that we were approved to attend training in February" , said Burgin. "This is when we will be officially "Girls on the run of Monroe County."

Right now, Paula's goal is to have every "site" full and then to grow the program in all of Monroe County. Paula currently has a group in Penfield that wants to get started at one of their elementary schools. People can register through Webster Parks and Recreation. If someone is interested in starting their own Girls on The Run site, they can contact Paula, the council director.

Their goal is to "get the word out" to parents and girls. You can check out the national website.  www.girlsontherun.org  If anyone is interested in starting their own program you may contact Paula at Webster Parks and Recreation 585 347-0051

Registration is open to any girl in grades 4-5. Scholarships are available. Choose the location and time that best fits your schedule. You do not have to attend these schools to participate at them.
