Both the PeeWee Major and Squirt Major travel teams from Webster Youth Hockey emerged from the Western New York Amateur Hockey League championship weekend with victories.Beginning the semi-finals as #4 seed underdogs the PeeWees faced the #1 seed Niagara Junior Purple Eagles. The Cyclones started off slowly allowing Niagara to take a 2-0 lead before scoring on the power play to end the first period at 2-1. The Purple Eagles added another in the second and from then on, it was all Webster. The Cyclones logged three unanswered goals before the end of the second and two more in the third, ending the game with a 6-3 win.
For the finals, Webster met the 3rd seed Southtown Stars on Friday, March 5th. Each team battled for control, but neither was able to gain the upper hand as the hard-fought first period ended without any scoring. The Webster boys responded to a detailed game plan laid out by their coaching staff between periods by scoring the first goal of the game only 9 seconds into the second period. The Cyclones continued their drive for the net by adding five more to the count, while the flawless defense continued to hold the Stars scoreless through two. Southtown finally got on the board in the third period, followed by both teams each trading two more goals, before Webster took full control, marking two additional tallies to triumphantly win the championship by a final score of 10-3.
Capping off a magnificent season, which included two tournament wins and a second place finish in Ottawa’s Bell Capital Cup, the Webster Cyclones Squirt Majors have added another trophy to the shelf. In the play-offs the Cyclones took on Clarence and jumped out to a quick lead putting three in the net in the first period. The second was scoreless for both teams, but the third saw Webster add a couple more to the scoreboard. A convincing 5-0 win earned them a trip to the Western New York Amateur Hockey League Finals for the 2nd straight year.
On Sunday, March 7th, the Cyclones found themselves back in Cheektowaga, this time facing the hometown Cheektowaga Warriors for the division Championship. Both goalies brought their A-games to the match-up, each turning away numerous shots. Webster finally managed to sneak one in about six minutes into the game, but the Warriors tied it up and struck with the go-ahead goal both before the end of the first period. Less then a minute into the second period the Cyclones scored again to tie the score at 2-2, which is where it stayed through most of the remainder of regulation time. Both teams battled hard in the second and third periods, both offensively and defensively, doing everything possible to try and get one by the opposing goalie, while keeping the puck out of their own net. Ultimately it was the Cyclones, with one minute left in the contest, who managed to break the tie and secure the title of 2009-2010 WNYAHL Squirt Major Division Champions.
